Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital

Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital (ESJH) is a 550-bed, acute care, private hospital with its own residencies in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, OB/GYN and Family Practice. ESJH offers residents a chance to experience Emergency Medicine in a large private hospital.  ESJH serves as a referral hospital for Kaiser Permanente's 389,000 members in the Denver area. In 1997, Exempla Saint Joseph opened a completely renovated ED with 52 ED beds and 12 observation unit beds. The emergency department's census in 2004 exceeded 50,000 visits. Patient visits to the emergency department are comprised of 78% medicine complaints, 5% trauma, 7% pediatrics, 5% OB/GYN and 5% psychiatric.  St. Joseph is a major interventional cardiovascular center in the region with almost 400 cardiac surgeries and over two thousand interventional and diagnostic catheterizations performed in 2004.  The admission rate from the ED is 20%, of which 13% requiring intensive care unit admission. 

Plans are in place to build a new state-of-the-art hospital by 2012.
