Congratulations to Drs Chris Davis, John Houghland, Ryan Paterson, and Jody Vogel!  They have been selected to be the 2010-2011 Chief Residents.

john.jpgDr John Houghland received the CORD Faculty Development Scholarship to attend the 2010 CORD Academic Assembly.  This annual scholarship is given by EMRA to three individuals nationally with significant academic and scholarly interest who have demonstrated teaching experience and a commitment to education.  Recipients of the 2009 CORD Faculty Development Scholarship included DHREM senior resident Dr Nathan Cleveland.

UC-Denver Departmental Status (1/1/2010): The Division of Emergency Medicine officially became a Department at the University of Colorado-Denver.

gabrielle.jpgDr Gabrielle Jacquet presented her research with Drs Renee King, MD MPH (UC-Denver faculty) and Dr David Richards, MD (chief '06) at the 2009 Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa International EM Conference in Cape Town.  Dr Jacquet evaluated patient transfers within the Western Cape and identified resources including off-site radiology reading that may have prevented up to 20% of patient transfers to regional medical centers.  A cost analysis of providing community clinics these resources compared to the savings from avoidable transfers will follow in future work.

zieske_michael.jpgDr Mike Zieske, MD was chosen as the winner of The Children's Hospital (TCH) monthly resident professionalism award for October 2009.  This honor, given to one non-peds resident monthly for outstanding work and professionalism, was awarded to Dr Zieske after being nominated by an ED nurse for his outstanding interpersonal interactions with staff and families.

ACEP Simwars 2009! DHREM were one of six residencies to compete in the ACEP 2009 Sim Wars, an interactive simulation competition that allowed them to try their honed simulation skills against other residency teams on simulated patient encounters in front of a large audience.

ED Construction: The first renovated wing of the Emergency Department opened in the winter of 2009, featuring 2 state-of-the-art medical resuscitation rooms, 14 monitored beds (each with TVs for patients and computers for staff), 8 monitored beds in the new ED observation unit, and computerized ED board.  Transition to use of the second renovated portion began in August, which features six new trauma resuscitation rooms and monitored minor trauma rooms. Completion of all construction is scheduled for March 2010.
