An Interview with Nick Jouriles, MD

Nick Jouriles, M.D. is the Immediate Past President of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at NEUOCOM/Akron General, and a 1987 graduate of Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine.  He has chaired several ACEP committees, including Educational Meetings and Bylaws, and received the ACEP Council’s Meritorious Service Award in 2002 for his outstanding contributions to emergency medicine.  Dr. Jouriles sat down with Marlow Macht (class of 2012) in the Fall 2009 to discuss his path to Denver, his training and career since residency, and his experience as president of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

 

An interview with Stephen Cantrill, MD

After a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades, Dr. Stephen Cantrill recently retired from the faculty of Denver Health. Dr. Cantrill is a nationally recognized expert and leader in the field of disaster preparedness and mass casualty events, and founder of the Denver Health-based Weapons of Mass Destruction Training Center. While at Denver Health, he served as associate director of the Department of Emergency Medicine for 15 years and received numerous Master Teacher and Clinical Excellence awards. Despite his retirement, Dr. Cantrill is still frequently seen at Denver Health wearing his signature bow ties and working on ED computer information systems. Denver Health graduate Ryan Windish (Class of 2008) sat down with Dr. Cantrill to discuss his experiences at Denver Health, research interests and views on the state of emergency medicine.

 

An Interview with John Marx, MD

John Marx is the Chair and Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Marxjoined Denver Health as an emergency medicine resident in 1978 and continued on as an attending physician in Denver for a decade after completing residency. During his tenure at Denver Health, Marx held numerous roles—including research director and director of medical students—and was honored with four Master Teacher awards. In addition to authoring numerous peer-reviewed, original manuscripts, Marx has served as Editor-in-Chief of Rosen’s Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice textbook for the past two editions. He spoke with Heather Prouty, a fourth-year resident at Denver Health.

 

An Interview with Carl Bonnett, M.D.

Dr. Bonnett, a former attending at Denver Health, was born and raised in the Chicago area and received his undergraduate training from the University of Iowa. He enlisted in the Colorado National Guard in 1995 and received his officer commissioning in 1998. After graduating from the University of Iowa Medical School, he received his postgraduate training at the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine, graduating in 2005. He completed an EMS Fellowship at the Denver Health Medical Center. He was recently involved in the Katrina Relief effort. He sat down with Stephen Paulson, a recently graduated resident at DenverHealth.

 

An Interview with Deb Houry, M.D., M.P.H.

 Debra Houry is a 2002 graduate of the Denver Health Emergency Medicine Residency who now is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She holds a joint appointment in the Rollins School of Public Health where she actively teaches courses in injury control and violence prevention. She is also the 2002 recipient of the Jay S. Drotman Memorial award which honorsthe most outstanding public health researcher in the United Statesunder the age of 30 years old. She sat down with Jonathan Claud, a former resident at Denver Health, on the eve of her grand rounds presentation as a distinguished alumna.

 



An Interview with Peter Pons, M.D.

ponspeter.jpgJonathan Claud sat down with Peter Pons, a retired Denver Health Emergency Medicine attending who is nationally and internationally respected as a leader in his field. After many years of service, Dr.Pons retired from Denver Health in August, 2006. This interview provides a glimpse of his background and perspective on the past and future of Emergency Medicine. The result is a fascinating look at a man who played a significant role in the lives and careers of almost every resident who has graduated from the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine.
